Learning objectives


Referring to knowledge

The aim of the subject is to improve technological capacities for biotechnological research as well as to give the opportunity to the students to discuss with top scientists in the field of biotechnology.

The student will learn to search all the methodologies related to biotechnological processes, be scientifically critical and discuss the collected information. Therefore, this subject will allow the students to be updated on a given research field.

The student will create their first Project. They will collect information based on their practical experience and they will learn to raise from a working hypothesis, some main objectives, a work plan, a schedule, a methodology and a budget.

*  The students will acquire knowledge and be updated in the biotechnological research through:

1. Scientific debates about hot topics in the biotechnological field

2. Attending conferences of leading leader investigators in the field

3. Exposing the acquired knowledge in oral presentations

The coordinators will guide the students on the updated and hot topic biotechnological fields of health, nutrition and industrial areas.

A. Supervised teaching

- How to search in the literature (research papers, revisions, book chapters) and attend to research seminars.


- Guidance at the scientific debates proposed by the coordinators. The debates will be related to hot topics in the biotechnological area. Students will be divided into 3 groups: in favour, against and audience. The groups will rotate at each debate and the students will have to prepare and be documented about the 3 roles. Examples of the topics for debate:

1. Is Alzheimer’s disease the new Type 3 Diabetes?

2. Does the discovery of the CRISP technology deserve the novel prize?

3. Should we use cannabinoids for therapy?

4. Should we use vaccines?


- Oral presentations will be done by all the students (10 minutes presentation + 3 minutes discussion) and they will select the biotechnological subject of interest. Both positive and negative points of the project will have to be argued.


 B. Not supervised teaching

- Search and read information about the selected topic.

- Attending research seminars and ask questions.

- Preparation of the oral presentation.



Official assessment of learning outcomes


The evaluation will include:

1- Discussed and argued opinions at the debates.

2- The material employed and presented by the student after attending scientific seminars and conferences.

3- Oral presentation
