Official assessment of learning outcomes

Continuous assessment

Students opting for the continuous mode of assessment must attend class regularly. Continuous assessment consists of:

  • A minimum of two practical and theoretical activities to be completed during the course. The activities are assessed on a continuous basis, that is, weekly or fortnightly, and are carried out during scheduled class sessions. These activities account for 6 points out of 10 of the final grade.
  • A final summary test, representing the remaining 4 points. This test is conducted at the end of the course and has both theoretical and practical components. To pass, students must obtain at least 2 points out of 4 on this test. This test may be oral and/or written.

Repeat assessment

Students enrolled on either the continuous or single modes of assessment are entitled to be re-evaluated under the terms established by the Academic Council of Sociology in the Faculty of Economics and Business. Repeat assessment takes the same format as that of the single mode of assessment. This test may be oral and/or written.

Examination-based assessment

Students unable to meet the requirements for continuous assessment are entitled to opt for the single mode of assessment. This consists of a final examination held on the date indicated in the programme’s official exam timetable. Preparation material includes the readings discussed in the practical classes and uploaded on the Virtual Campus, the subject’s reference manual, and any material indicated by the teaching staff in the PowerPoint files available on the Virtual Campus.

The examination comprises five sections. One section may be multiple choice; the remainder combine short- (conceptual) and long-answer questions, covering the whole syllabus. These questions assess the competences (knowledge and skills) acquired throughout the course. This exam may be oral and/or written.
