Learning objectives

 

Referring to knowledge

The study of economic processes requires close attention to the institutional frameworks, social settings, and regulatory contexts in which they unfold. This course aims to:

  • Develop an understanding of the foundations for evaluating institutional interventions; the political contexts in which economic interventions are made; and the moral, rational, and emotional bases of decision-making by social and political actors.
  • Provide students with a knowledge of, and the ability to critically analyse, key international research on the relationship between the State and society.

Official assessment of learning outcomes

 

To pass the course, students must successfully complete both of the assessment activities below. 

  • The final exam – conducted according to the criteria established by the teaching staff on the specific programme for each group (A1 or F1). The exam accounts for 50% of the final grade.
  • Seminar participation – based on the reading, discussion, and presentation of comments on a series of texts set by the teaching staff on the specific programme for each group. This component accounts for 50% of the final grade.
  • An alternative to seminar participation may be offered comprising the completion of written assignments (subject to a verification test to confirm authorship and understanding of the content by the student), under the conditions specified at the beginning of September via the Virtual Campus in the document "Programme and Procedures". This document provides all the necessary information. This alternative does not exempt students from sitting the exam. The assignments may be discussed with the lecturer in a tutorial session, if deemed appropriate.


Students may also be eligible for reassessment Repeat assessment in accordance with Faculty regulations.

A student is considered to have opted for the continuous mode of assessment if they sit the final exam. Failure to take this exam is interpreted as a decision to withdraw from the continuous mode and of opting for the single mode of assessment.

 

Examination-based assessment

To pass the course, students must complete both an exam and a written assignment, according to the criteria established by the teaching staff on the specific programme for each group (A1 or F1). The exam will include a test verifying the authorship and understanding of the content of the assignment. Full information will be provided in the final programme at the beginning of the course.
