Teaching methods and general organization

The teaching methodology for this subject combines face-to-face lectures and a range of individual and small-group activities to be carried out in class and outside class hours (case studies, problem-solving exercises, etc.). During the lectures, students work on the contents of the teaching plan to meet the established objectives.

Every week has a class load of four hours. In most cases, the sessions begin with theoretical explanations and are then devoted to the practical resolution of problems and exercises, both individually and in small groups.

The Virtual Campus is used for communication between students and the teaching staff and to post academic and administrative information (assessment regulations, submission dates for coursework activities, etc.).

Attendance of face-to-face sessions is an important part of the learning process, as the teaching methodology focuses on individual and group work and, above all, participation in class. Students are expected to prepare exercises, solve cases and complete the recommended reading before each class, following the general course schedule.

The GIE group, which is formed by students who have already completed the subject, follows a specific teaching methodology. Two hours of tuition are given per week, in early-afternoon sessions. This is a group that makes intensive use of the Virtual Campus.

Official assessment of learning outcomes

Students have two assessment options: continuous assessment or single assessment.

Continuous assessment

Continuous assessment implies evaluating progress in the subject and involves the completion of various exercises throughout the course, with different scores attached to different assignments.

The specific activities and corresponding assessment criteria are posted on the Virtual Campus at the beginning of the course. At least one of the assessed activities is an individual examination.

To complete the continuous assessment procedure, students must sit a final examination on the whole course contents, on the date established by the Academic Council.

For this method of assessment, the following points should be observed:

— The overall mark for continuous assessment is worth 40% of the final grade for the subject. The mark for the final examination accounts for the remaining 60%. Students are only eligible to pass the course if they obtain a mark of 4 out of 10 or higher for the final examination.

— Students must obtain an overall mark of 5.75 out of 10 of higher for the continuous assessment activities. Students who obtain a mark of less than 5.75 are entered for single assessment, in which case the final grade is the mark awarded for the final examination (100%).

— Students who submit the first continuous assessment activity are entered for this assessment procedure.

— The final examination for continuous assessment students is divided into two parts, each worth 50% of the mark: a theory section, containing multiple-choice questions and open-answer questions; and a practical section, containing numerical problems or case studies. At least 4 out of 10 is required in each section to be eligible for weighting of the final grade. The final examinations for continuous assessment students and single assessment students are held on the same day but the contents and requirements are different.

The content, procedure and criteria for repeat assessment are the same as those described for the single assessment option.

Examination-based assessment

Single assessment consists of a final examination worth 100% of the final grade. The examination is divided into two parts, each worth 50% of the grade: a theory section, containing multiple-choice questions and open-answer questions; and a practical section, containing numerical problems or case studies. At least 4 out of 10 is required in each section to be eligible for weighting of the final grade.

The content, procedure and criteria for repeat assessment are the same as those described for the single assessment option.
