  • Gain a practical understanding of the tools, systems and models used in quality management and other related business practices.
  • Use and analyse management systems associated with quality, in particular those related to the environment and social responsibility.

Teaching methods and general organization

The methodology combines lectures, which introduce the core concepts, with practical classes designed to apply and consolidate the material. The success of this approach depends on active student participation, both in class and through individual and group work outside the classroom.

Planned activities include, among others, the analysis of practical cases and multiple-choice examinations. The specific tasks are outlined at the beginning of the semester in the course syllabus. Some activities form part of the ongoing Teaching Quality Enhancement Project in the Faculty of Economics and Business, coordinated by the Research, Innovation and Teaching Enhancement Unit (RIMDA) and the Vice-Rectorate for Academic Policy of the University of Barcelona.

The Virtual Campus serves as the main platform for communication and all student guidelines for following this course are uploaded there. The lecture slides are not intended to replace lecture notes, but rather to act as a guide for following the sessions.

Students are reminded that all teaching materials for this course (including slides, exercises, cases, sample examinations, and other resources) are the intellectual property of the University of Barcelona and may only be used within the classroom and the Virtual Campus. Any use outside these spaces—such as uploading material to unauthorised platforms—constitutes a breach of use. Similarly, recording of classes is strictly prohibited without the explicit consent of the teaching staff, in accordance with data protection and copyright regulations. Any questions regarding the permitted use of materials should be addressed to the lecturer. However, if improper use of the type described is detected, the teaching staff will withdraw all materials from the Virtual Campus.

Official assessment of learning outcomes

In this mode, exercises and practical activities are carried out both in class and outside the classroom, individually and in groups. Continuous assessment is an option that requires ongoing engagement with the course and consists of submitting various activities throughout the semester, by means of which students obtain a series of marks based on assessable evidence.

Students opting for this mode of assessment should note that regular class attendance is required, since exercises and practicals are not always announced on the Virtual Campus. Work produced using artificial intelligence tools will not be accepted.

Weighting of continuous assessment

The activities evaluated within this mode are as follows:

  • In-class activities (35%): a series of short exercises to be submitted in class, designed to consolidate understanding of course content. These may be individual or group activities carried out in class and are not announced previously on the Virtual Campus. Some activities may be assigned to complete outside the classroom. To pass this component, at least 80% of the classroom activities must be completed.
  • Multiple-choice test on the contents of teaching block 1 "Quality" (T1+T2+T3) (15%): 30 multiple-choice questions covering the three quality management topics. This is an individual activity. The exact date will be announced on the Virtual Campus, but it is expected to be scheduled in the middle of November. The content may be assessed again in the final exam.
  • Final multiple-choice exam (30%): 30 multiple-choice questions covering all topics presented during the course. This is an individual activity. The exact date will be announced on the Virtual Campus, but it is expected to be scheduled in the last week of the semester, in December.
  • Final practical case (20%): resolution and presentation of a practical case. This is a group activity. The exact date will be announced on the Virtual Campus, but it is expected to be scheduled in the last week of the semester, in December.

The course competences are assessed through the activities included in this mode, which simulate different scenarios of business decision-making according to the situations presented.

Students are deemed to have if the final mark obtained for continuous assessment is at least 5 out of 10. Under no circumstances are students entitled to improve their final grade by completing additional assignments or exercises. Students who do not obtain this minimum mark may be assessed by means of the single-assessment mode.

Students required to sit the repeat assessment test will be examined on the entire course content (note, any continuous assessment marks cannot be carried forward). Repeat assessment follows the same format as that of the single mode of assessment.

Examination-based assessment

Students who, for valid reasons, are unable to adhere to the continuous mode of assessment may opt for the single mode. This waiver of the continuous mode of assessment is formalised directly at the final exam on the date set by the Academic Board. Likewise, students who do not pass the continuous mode of assessment may also be assessed by means of single assessment and should sit the final exam on the date set by the Academic Board.

In this mode of assessment, on the exam date established by the Academic Board, students are evaluated on the entire syllabus by means of written exam composed of two parts: a multiple-choice test (50% of the exam grade) and a case study with short-answer questions (50% of the exam grade). The exam mark constitutes the final grade for the course.

Students are deemed to have if the final mark is at least 5 out of 10. Under no circumstances are students entitled to improve their final grade by completing additional assignments or exercises.

The course competences are assessed through the exam, both in the multiple-choice questions and in the short-answer questions, which present different scenarios of business decision-making according to the context provided.

Students required to sit the repeat assessment test will be examined on the entire course content. Repeat assessment follows the same format as that of the single mode of assessment.
