Teaching methods and general organization

 

Independent learning is encouraged and techniques to enhance the learning process are explained. The teaching methodology is based on a combination of the following:

Face-to-face theory and practical classes (60 hours): these include both instruction in theoretical concepts and corresponding practical exercises and are designed to develop the capacities for productivity and receptivity: oral comprehension; written communication exercises; conversation (simulations of situations involving everyday and business communication).

Supervised and/or directed learning (40 hours): conversation (simulations of situations involving everyday and business communication); group work and oral presentations. This implies developing capacities for organisation and planning of study, researching bibliographic information and communicating knowledge through an oral presentation on an article from a specialized journal or newspaper determined at the start of the course. Tutorial classes designated for the supervision of directed learning activities are compulsory. Preparation, supervision and completion of exercises set throughout the course: writing simple texts and reading comprehension exercises.

Independent learning (50 hours): individual study and preparation for assessment tasks.

 

 

Official assessment of learning outcomes

 

Assessment is designed to clearly show the level of achievement of the established objectives and competences. In terms of assessment for the subject, there are two possibilities: continuous assessment and single assessment. Repeat assessment may only take the form of the latter.

Students who wish to renounce continuous assessment and opt for single assessment must do so before 20 October 2025

Continuous assessment

Continuous assessment is recommended for students who attend class regularly, as tests are set throughout the entire teaching period. The evaluation of learning outcomes takes into account the following activities:

Compulsory activities
— Individual exercises (written exercises, reading comprehension, etc.): 10%.
— Comprehensive examination 1: 30%.
— Comprehensive examination 2: 30%.
— Individual oral presentation: 30%.

Other activities completed within or out of the classroom
— Further study and review of the concepts introduced in the classroom.
— Self-evaluation exercises.

 

Examination-based assessment

Students who opt for single assessment will sit a final examination on the entire course content held on the day of the first sitting for examination. The examination will comprise a written component (including grammar and communication exercises, a written expression exercise, and a reading and an oral comprehension exercise, 60%), and oral communication (40%).

Within the single assessment mode, students who demonstrate that they have attained a language level higher than that specified in the subject’s course plan have the option of task-based assessment.

This assessment consists of undertaking a set of written and oral tasks/exercises, which will be indicated at the start of the academic year. Through these tasks, students must develop a range of specific competences relating to companies in an international environment.

Students who are interested in opting for this mode must contact the lecturer who is responsible for the subject at the start of the academic year and attend a personal interview.


Repeat assessment

Students who do not pass the course through continuous or single assessment have the right to repeat assessment. The content, form and criteria are the same as for the single assessment.
