Learning objectives

Referring to knowledge

This subject serves as a general introduction to management computing. It is divided into two main areas: the first introduces the basic concepts of management computing and focuses on the ability to employ the tools available to address the problems that arise in company management; and the second includes the study of the methodological aspects of programming and learning databases and spreadsheets. These software are essential for the business environment. Databases and spreadsheets enable the main administrative and productive tasks to be carried out in the field of management.

Thus, the general objectives proposed for the subject are:

  • Acquire the ability to detect the tools available for solving everyday problems in the company and know how to apply them.
  • Acquire the ability to design databases to manage business environments and structure business proposals.
  • Acquire the ability to prepare spreadsheets to carry out administrative, economic and commercial tasks.

Teaching methods and general organization

Since this is particularly practical content, carried out largely in computer classrooms, students constantly and immediately apply the knowledge acquired in the exercises and practical sessions that are carried out in the classroom. The development of the subject is carried out considering the following general guidelines:

Face-to-face teaching and learning

  • Lecturers aim to present prior knowledge and clarify concepts, as well as guide and stimulate the student. Students have access to additional material and information provided by lecturers through the Virtual Campus, which serves as a guide and complements classes.
  • Group work with problem-solving cases, so that students can discuss and solve them with classmates under the supervision of the lecturer.
  • Student presentation: problems are solved later in the classroom.
  • Examination: part of the subject is assessed with a face-to-face exam.

Directed teaching and learning

  • Teamwork: throughout the course, the teaching staff proposes case studies that students must solve in small groups outside the classroom and which they must submit within a set deadline. These activities are part of the final grade.
  • Face-to-face and virtual tutorial sessions: during tutoring hours, teachers are available to students to clarify any doubts or questions; also via email.
  • Participation in forums: the teaching staff keeps the forum active as a group communication tool between students, and between students and lecturers.

Teaching and independent learning

  • Readings: Students have access to readings related to the different topics on the programme on the Virtual Campus.
  • Independent study: independently preparing some parts of the syllabus and solving problems presented in class.
  • Exams, organization of notes and/or material.
  • Search for information from recommended information sources.

Official assessment of learning outcomes

Continuous assessment requires students to attend class on a regular basis and to complete and submit a range of activities during the semester. The specific activities and assessment regulations are announced at the beginning of the course. To complete the continuous assessment, students sit the final exam, which covers the entire content of the course.

For this method of assessment the following points should be observed:

  • The overall mark for continuous assessment is worth 60% of the final grade for the subject; and the final examination mark, the remaining 40%.
  • It is mandatory to submit all continuous assessment practical activities and obtain an average of at least 5 out of 10.
  • Students must obtain a mark of at least 4 out of 10 in the final examination to be eligible to receive a final grade for the subject.
  • Students who submit the first continuous assessment activity are entered for this assessment procedure.

Students who do not pass the continuous assessment can be examined through repeat assessment. The content, procedure and criteria for repeat assessment are the same as those described for the single assessment option.

Examination-based assessment

Students who are unable to meet the requirements for continuous assessment are entitled to single assessment.

For this method of assessment the following points should be observed:

  • Single assessment consists of a final examination worth 100% of the final grade.

The content, procedure and criteria for repeat assessment are the same as those described for the single assessment option.
