Learning objectives

Referring to knowledge

— Explain how the concept of a complex trait in genetics relates to other epidemiological, genetic and methodological concepts and identify and describe these concepts in relation to a specific trait or disorder.

— Discuss the diversity of the biological mechanisms involved in the development of these traits, from genetic, epigenetic and proteomic variability to the interaction of this variability with environmental factors.

— Identify the main methods used to study these biological mechanisms and compare their application in different types of study.

— Plan and write a research project, defining its context and the main hypotheses and objectives.

— Write the different parts of an application to conduct a research project and identify the language used in pre-doctoral contracts.

Teaching blocks

1. Block 1. Groundwork and preparation

*

  • Forming work groups.
  • Selecting the topic. (The teacher suggests specific topics accompanied by introductory material.)
  • Identifying the key concepts and methods to be used.
  • Division of labour and planning of the independent work to be completed by the different members of the work groups.
  • Work group meetings to report back on the progress made, share and evaluate the data gathered and generate common areas of research.
  • Meetings between work groups to share material and data.
  • Supervision by the teacher of the various tasks the work group is carrying out.
  • Submission of work completed. (Note that this component is evaluated.)

Note that the total completion of this content may be subject to official COVID-19 restrictions.
