Learning objectives

Referring to knowledge

The objectives are obviously conditioned by the specific subject chosen, by the type of study undertaken and by the methodology adopted. However, the following might be common objectives:

Official assessment of learning outcomes

Assessment of the dissertation (henceforth TFG) requires students to successfully complete a series of different phases, in which their acquisition of various skills is evaluated. Students cannot pass to the next phase until they have obtained a minimum score on all assessable skills.

The TFG, whatever its nature, must be written up in report format.

Once the written report has been completed, to the satisfaction of the supervising tutor, the TFG must be defended before an assessment committee, which evaluates the student’s skills of oral and written communication. The student must provide the committee with an executive summary of the TFG in English. The student’s oral proficiency in English is also assessed during the defence.

Students must pass the following phases of the continuous mode of assessment:

Choice of topic, planning and project development (40%).
Final written study (20%).
Self-assessment report identifying the extent to which objectives have been met (15%).
Executive summary of the TFG and public defence (25%). This includes the assessment of English language competence. Students should demonstrate good language skills both in the written report and when defending their work orally.

The overall grade for these first three phases cannot be less than 5 points out of 10; the overall grade of the executive summary must be equal to or higher than 5 points out of 10, and the overall grade of the oral defence must also be higher than 5 points out of 10. If a final (almost definitive) draft is not submitted, students cannot be assessed and will appear as a ’no show’ (i.e. no presentat) on the final grade record. Students that do not obtain the minimum grade to pass the course appear as ’fail’.

Repeat assessment

On the corresponding date in the Faculty’s calendar and before the oral defence, students can resubmit TFGs and self-assessment reports that failed to satisfy the examiners due to errors of orthography or syntax or other formal defects, provided they have been revised in line with the tutor’s comments.

Similarly, students failing the oral defence or the executive summary can resubmit their corrected work before a new assessment committee. Repeat assessment is carried out six to ten days after the end of the public defence period, but under no circumstances can students with a grade equal to or higher than 5 be reassessed, regardless of the overall grade attained on the course. The maximum grade available to students on the tests forming part of the repeat mode of assessment is 5.

The characteristics of this course mean it is suited solely to continuous assessment.

Extraordinary examination session: specific conditions

The TFGs presented during the extraordinary examination session must meet the following requirements:

The topic of the TFG cannot be changed with respect to that presented at the ordinary examination session.
The same tutor must supervise the TFG, except in exceptional situations and when the subject coordinator deems it necessary.
Students must attend a prior meeting with the TFG coordinator. This meeting must be requested by the student. If the student does not attend this meeting, they cannot pass the course.
Students must attend an initial tutorial and a subsequent follow-up tutorial. These tutorials must adhere to the following conditions:
- The tutorials must be requested by the student.
- If the student does not attend these tutorials, they cannot pass the course.
- The tutor can ask the student to attend additional tutorials, if he/she considers it necessary. These tutorials are also deemed to be compulsory.

The dates for submitting and defending the TFG are as established in the Faculty’s calendar or as indicated in the Virtual Campus for students presenting their work during the ordinary examination session.

The elements for assessment are the same as those established for students presenting their work during the ordinary examination session.
